 Born in Haifa, Israel (1942); Ph.D. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 1976. Eleazar Sukenik Chair in the Archaeology of Israel from 1994, Professor Emeritus from 2011. Main fields of research: The archaeology of the Levant in the Bronze and Iron Ages; the relationship between archaeology and Old Testament history. Directed archaeological excavations at Tell Qasile (1973-1974, 1982-1988), Tel Batash (biblical Timnah) (1977-1989), Tel Beth Shean (1989 - 1996); Tel Rehov (1997 - 2012). Smaller scale field projects at the "Bull Site"; Giloh; Khirbet Marjameh; Khirbet Abu et-Twein; Hurvat Shilhah; Hartuv; Hurvat `Eres. Author of *Archaeology of the Land of the Bible* (New York 1990); author, editor or co-editor of fourteen volumes of archaeological reports on the excavations at Tell Qasile, Tel Batash, Tel Beth-Shean and Tel Rehov (the latter forthcoming); author of numerous research papers; editor of the Hebrew magazine Qadmoniot (1994-1995); co-editor of *Israel exploration Journal* (2010-2015). Chairman of the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1995-1998); member of the council of the Israel Antiquities Authority (2000-2005); member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (from 2012). Awards: Israel Museum Schimmel Prize for research in archaeology (2007); Israel Prize for Research in Archaeology (2009); Irene Sala best scholarly book in archaeology (2014).
