Between Gash and Atbara. The Archaeology of Eastern Sudan 

Prof. Andrea Manzo has participated in several archaeological excavations and surveys in Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea since 1991. In Sudan, he was a team member of the Italian Archaeological Mission to the Sudan (Kassala) and took part in the survey as well as in the excavations at the site of Mahal Teglinos. He obtained a PhD in African Archaeology at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" and the Certificat International en Archéologie Africaine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is presently teaching Nubian and Ethiopian archaeology and ancient history and Archaeology of the Nile valley at the University “L’Orientale”. Andrea Manzo has authored several monographs and articles on the archaeology of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt and is currently directing the Italian Archaeological Expedition to the Eastern Sudan and Eritrea of the University “L’Orientale” and ISMEO.

Prof. Manzo, archaeologist and director of the Italian Archaeological Expedition to the Eastern Sudan since 2010, is the lead researcher for this Shelby White and Leon Levy Program project. He has participated in all archaeological campaigns for the excavation and surveys of the Italian Archaeological Mission to the Sudan (Kassala) since 1991. Prof. Manzo will be working with an Italian team, coordinating the study of the archaeological materials and the process of digitization and study of the archives (photographic materials, excavation drawings, maps, excavation and survey notebooks) related to the archaeological investigations conducted in Eastern Sudan from 1980 to 1995 and presently kept in the Museum Umberto Scerrato of the University “L’Orientale”. He will coordinate the contributions of the researchers and oversee the development of the database and the consequent electronic publication of the materials as well as the production and publication of the monographs.
