Dr. Elisabetta di Virgilio is a Classical archaeologist and Research Fellow at the Institute of Cultural Heritage Science (CNR, Italy). She is specialized in the study of the archaeological assemblages as a means to explore cultural interactions, human mobility, and trade networks across the Greek and Roman world.
Dr. di Virgilio holds a PhD in History and Trasmission of Cultural Heritage from the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” (Italy). Her doctoral research centered on the typological and technological analysis of the Late-Archaic and Classical pottery from the sanctuaries of ancient Cumae, in the Bay of Naples.
She has participated in several archaeological excavations in Italy, Greece and Albania, acting as Pottery Specialist and Finds Supervisor. In these roles, she has also trained students in the cataloging and documentation of the archaeological finds.
Her research interests include ceramic production technologies and provenance studies; the interpretation of cults and sacred complexes; the transmission of knowledge and the cross-cultural exchange networks in the ancient Mediterranean. Finally, she is engaged in the application of digital methodologies for the 3D reconstruction of artifacts and in petrographic methods for the investigation of ceramic production.
