Joachim Bretschneider has worked as a Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Ghent (Belgium) since 2014. After receiving his PhD degree with a study on House Models from the Ancient Near East and Eastern Mediterranean (1990) at the W.W.U.Münster (Germany), he was affiliated with the University of Leuven (Belgium) as a researcher and lecturer. Bretschneider has extensive archaeological experience in the capacity of director of the German participation of the European excavations at Tell Beydar (Syria), as well as the director of the Tell Tweini (Syria) and the Al-Ghat (Saudi Arabia) Projects. Currently he is co-heading the Pyla-Kokkinokremos excavation in Cyprus. Besides the (transitional) Late Bronze – Early Iron Age period in the Levant and the Eastern Mediterranean, his research foci are settlement archaeology and glyptic.
