Karin Sowada
The Australian Centre for Egyptology (Macquarie University) Teti Cemetery Project at Saqqara
Karin is an archaeologist with over 30 years’ experience on sites in Egypt and the Middle East. Her research specialty is Egypt and its relations with the Levant during the 3rd millennium BC which has led her to work and research at archaeological sites across the region, including Pella (Sydney University) and Khirbet Iskander (Gannon University, USA) in Jordan. In Egypt, Karin has been member of the Macquarie University team on the Theban necropolis for over two decades, in addition working at Saqqara, Memphis, Abydos and Dendera for Australian and international missions. In 2017, she joined the faculty team at Macquarie on a 4-year Australian Research Council Future Fellowship with the project Pyramids, power and the dynamics of states in crisis, examining Egypt’s role as a state actor in the eastern Mediterranean during the Early Bronze Age. She currently teaches archaeological method and the archaeology of early complex societies, in addition to serving as Director of the Australian Centre for Egyptology.
