Zeytinli Bahçe: the 1999-2007 excavations. The long history of a site at the crossroads of Mesopotamia and Anatolia

 Marcella Frangipane as a Full Professor of Archaeology (Prehistory) has taught Prehistory and Proto-history of the Near and Middle East, and Strategies and Methods of Archaeological Research at the Sapienza University of Rome till 2018. She was also part of the Council of the PhD School in Archaeology at the same University.

She is member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Italy), Foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and Foreign Fellow of the British Academy (FBA). She is also member of the Deutsches Archäologische Institut in Berlin and the Archaeological Institute of America.

M.F. has been the Editor in Chief of the journal Origini and the Series Studi di Preistoria Orientale (SPO), and is the Editor of the monographic publications ‘Arslantepe’.

She has a long experience in field researches, carried out in Italy, Mexico, Egypt and Turkey, and has been the director of the Italian Archaeological Expedition in Eastern Anatolia of the Sapienza University of Rome for more than 30 years (1990-2019), leading the excavations at Arslantepe-Malatya and Zeytinli Bahçe, Urfa (Turkey). Her major research interests are the origin and development of hierarchical and unequal societies, early centralised economies, urbanization and the birth of bureaucracy and Early State in the Ancient Near East, with particular reference to Mesopotamia and Anatolia.

She has received the Discovery Award by the Shanghai Archaeology Forum, the Vittorio De Sica Prize for Science; the Rotondi Prize to Art Saviors, and the honorary PhD by the University of Malatya (Turkey).

She will direct this Shelby White and Leon Levy Program publication project with Dr. Andrea Ricci.
