The Archaeology of Lower Sindh and Las Bela Revised: Along the River, Down to the Sea

Dr. Paolo Biagi was born in Brescia (Italy) in 1948. He obtained a PhD Degree from the Institute of Archaeology, London University, in 1981. He was Curator of the Natural History Museum of Brescia (Italy) before entering the University of Genoa as a Researcher in 1978. In 1981 he was appointed Associate Professor of Palaeoethnology at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and in 2002 Full Professor of Prehistory and Protohistory in the same University. His interests, apart from the prehistoric archaeology of the Indus Valley and the Arabian Sea coasts, range from coastal archaeology, shell middens, high-altitude archaeology, prehistoric mining, lithic technology, obsidian studies and the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. He has carried out surveys and excavations in northern Italy, Sardinia, Oman, Kuwait, Pakistan, Mongolia, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania and Greece. He has edited 15 prehistoric archaeology volumes in Italy and abroad. In Oman he has conducted coastal surveys and excavated the shell middens of RH-5 and RH-6 in Muscat, and the fishermen’s site of RJ-1 at Ra’s al Jinz. 

He was co-director of the “Joint Rohri Hills Project” a joint venture with the Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur (Sindh), and has been appointed a gold medal from the same University. He is the author of over 470 papers, 92 of which are on the prehistory of Pakistan, published in International, Pakistani and Italian scientific journals. In Pakistan he has carried out surveys and excavations in the Rohri Hill, Ongar, the northern Arabian Sea coast and Lake Siranda in Las Bela (Balochistan), collaborating with the Universities of Khairpur, Karachi, Jamshoro, Islamabad, Uthal and Quetta. He was appointed Honorary Professor at the I.I. Mechnikov University, Odessa, and P. Mogila, Black Sea University, Nikolaev, Ukraine. He is an Honorary Member of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Member of the International Association of Prehistory and Protohistory (Paris). He is a guest co-editor of Land MDPI, Special Issue, “Archaeological Landscape and Settlement” three volumes, and is a reviewer of ESF and ERC projects. At present he is the Co-director of the Mt. Chikiani Project in the Caucasus of Georgia, and the Grevena Project in the Pindos Range of Western Macedonia (Greece), and is Director of the Italian Archaeological Expedition in Lower Sindh and Las Bela (Pakistan).
