The “Desert Kites” of the Harrat al-Shaam Desert in northeastern Jordan


Dr Rémy Crassard has been an archaeologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) since 2010. He was previously a doctoral fellow at the French center for archaeology and social sciences (CEFAS) in Yemen (2004-2007). After obtaining a PhD in Anthropology from Sorbonne University in Paris (2007), he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge (2007-2009).

Since 1998, he has participated in more than 70 archaeological expeditions, in many countries of the Middle East including Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. A specialist of the prehistory of the Arabian Peninsula, he is a permanent member of several international archaeological projects. He was the director of the Globalkites Project (2013-2017) funded by the French Agency for Scientific Research (ANR) with fieldworks in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kazakhstan and Armenia. He is currently the codirector of the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project (Saudi Arabia).

Dr. Rémy Crassard has been teaching at Universities in France and abroad, and has extensively published papers in international journals, book chapters and books. He was appointed at CEFAS Kuwait (now CEFREPA) from 2017 to 2020, as permanent researcher and CEFAS Head of Archaeology. Since the end of 2020, he has been Deputy Director of the CNRS laboratory Archéorient in Lyon, France. Since 2022, he also has been co-editor of the international scientific journal Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy.
