The Neolithic Site of Tell Mureybet

PUBLISHED 2008. Please visit the publication's webpage

This grant supports the publication of the site of Tell Mureybet, with Late Natufian and Early Neolithic periods (Pre-Pottery Neolithic A, including the older Khiamian and the younger Mureybetian horizons, Early and Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B). This site was excavated between 1971 and 1974 by J. Cauvin, preceded by the soundings carried out by M. van Loon in 1964 and 1965. This site demonstrates the in situ transition towards farming in the Middle Euphrates region, including the first experiences of wild cereal cultivation and animal herding. The PPNA villages shows the transition from rounded to squared houses built on surface, which are organized around rounded excavated houses of multipurpose function (stocking, food preparation, social and symbolic).

The publication project is directed by Dr. Juan José Ibáñez.
