Portus: The Maritime Harbour of Imperial Rome.

Excavations of the University of Southampton, 2013–2018

Dragana Mladenović is a researcher at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA) in Mainz, where she contributes to the research cluster in Roman Archaeology. She holds a BA in Archaeology from the University of Belgrade and an MSt and DPhil in Classical Archaeology from the University of Oxford. Prior to joining LEIZA, she served as a Lecturer in Roman Archaeology at the University of Southampton, as well as a Lecturer in Classical Archaeology and Tutor in Archaeology and Anthropology at St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford. Her research has a dual focus: on the one hand, she specializes in the city of Rome and the urban–maritime landscape of the Lower Tiber Valley; on the other, she works on the Roman Balkans and processes of imperial integration in the region. She has extensive experience in directing and managing complex fieldwork projects in Italy and the Balkans.

In 2006, Dr. Mladenović joined the Portus Project team starting fieldwork at Portus (Italy) and she went on to become the co-director of project in 2012, with Simon Keay and Graeme Earl (Southampton). Since 2021 she has served as sole director, overseeing post-excavation work and undertaking publication of the 2006–2018 excavations. Her Shelby White and Leon Levy Program project focuses on specialist analyses of materials from the 2013–2018 campaigns and the publication of that phase of the project.
