Life and Economy in the Insula of the 'House of the Comedians' on Delos Island in Hellenistic Times: A Reassessment 50 Years after Excavation

Dr. Sandrine Elaigne is a researcher in archeology and a Greco-Roman pottery specialist. She has held a position at the CNRS (UMR 5138, Archaeology & Archaeometry) for ten years. She was involved in the of the Fourvière hill archaeological excavations in Lyon until 1992 and then in those in Alexandria until 1998, after which time she devoted herself to Greco-Roman pottery study. Her PhD concerns Hellenistic fine pottery sequences from urban Alexandria excavations. After getting a post-doctorate at French Institute of Near-East (IFPO) to establish archaeological sequences and characterize pottery assemblages of Hellenistic period remains in Beirut down-town (BEY 002), she continued her research about Mediterranean ceramic productions distribution in Alexandria, Tire and Delos.

Her research focuses on technological and cultural Greco-Roman pottery evolution and on regional hellenistic pottery sequences from different urban contexts in Mediterranean areas such as Berytos and Alexandria in order to determine trading networks. She is also interested in wares contents whether they are food or not. She is the lead coordinator for this Shelby White and Leon Levy Project which will to cross artefacts studies, ancient archaeological field datas, and architectural sequences analysis in the aim of establishing the spatial distribution of artefacts and the functions of spaces at Comedians house insula in Delos (Greece).
